LETAVET Avgust Andreevich

February 6, 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of a prominent scientist, hygienist, laureate of the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR, doctor of medical sciences, professor, Academician and academician-secretary of the Department of Hygiene, Microbiology and Epidemiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, director of the Research Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Diseases (now – FSBSI “Izmerov Research Institute of Occupational Health”) from 1948 to 1971, as well as the Honored master of sports, the chair of the mountaineering section of FSA “Science” and the member of the Presidium of the All-Union Federation of the Alpine, traveler and explorer of the mountain peaks in August Letavet.

His field of scientific interests captured all areas of occupational hygiene, starting from the industrial microclimate, physiology and ergonomics of labor and ending with the influence of radiant energy on the health of workers.

In addition, snow travel and organization of expeditions to the mountains of the Caucasus, the Pamirs and the Tien Shan captured his entire life. He conducted several dozen research trips to heights exceeding 6,000 meters. The Letavet Pass (4880 m) in the ridge of Peter the Great, Letavet Peak (6046), with two saddles, Eastern and Western, are nowadays named after a large hygienist and climber explorer.
